In Mozambique, cervical cancer (CC) presents a significant global health concern, with an annual incidence of 5300 new cases and 3800 deaths. The WHO encourages the integration of HPV molecular testing for cervical cancer screening, yet Mozambique remains committed to the approach of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA). In this Mozambique study, the potential of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing is evaluated, relative to existing diagnostic methods.
The DREAM center in Zimpeto, Mozambique, was the focus of an observational study. Participants in the study included women ranging in age from 30 to 55 years old. HPV testing was executed by employing the Cobas HPV test's capabilities. Their screening was conducted in accordance with the current national VIA recommendations. Among the 1207 enrolled women, a 478% HIV+ rate was observed; 124 (103%) were positive for VIA; and a positive HPV DNA test was detected in 325 (269%) women.
